Painting your concrete basement walls not only helps protect your basement against mold, water, bacteria and mildew but also adds to the look of your basement, especially if you use it as a work or rec room.

To paint your basement walls, you'll need a concrete primer and some water-resistant paint. Before you do any painting, clean the walls with a damp cloth and remove any mildew stains with bleach and warm water. Then, apply one coat of primer followed by 2 coats of paint, letting the walls dry in between coats.

If you really truly want a light and bright basement, a light paint colour alone won't save you-you need good lighting. Light colours will fall flat in a room without enough natural and/or artificial light to support them.

Waterproof paint is fine for DIY application. You can apply it over painted surfaces, and paint over it once it's cured (1 gal./$35). Plastic sheets and panels are suitable as wall waterproofing only in combination with interior basement drainage systems. They don't stop water from getting through the wall, but they do stop it from ruining
